Can you claim Czech citizenship through a parent?
Citizen by descent or declaration
A child of a Czech citizen is Czech by birth; a child of someone who lost Czechoslovak citizenship before 2014 can acquire it by declaration. Either way, you keep your other citizenship.
- A child acquires citizenship by birth if at least one parent is a Czech citizen. Act No. 186/2013 on Citizenship of the Czech Republic, §31 (declaration by former citizens and their descendants) and §4, §4
- Children of former Czech or Czechoslovak citizens who lost citizenship before 1 January 2014 may acquire it by declaration. Act No. 186/2013 on Citizenship of the Czech Republic, §31 (declaration by former citizens and their descendants) and §4, §31(1) and (3)
What changes the answer
- UNLIKELYIf your ancestor left Czechia before 1918Declaration (§31)
An ancestor who left before 1918 was an Austrian subject, not a Czechoslovak citizen, and the declaration option runs through people who held and lost Czechoslovak citizenship.
