Obtain a signed Åland employment contract and apply for the first Finnish work-based residence permit from outside Finland; the employer supplies terms of employment in Enter Finland.

Time: Processing starts after the authority accepts a complete file; travel and work begin only after the required permission issues.
Cost: The authority assesses its filing charge under the fee schedule in force on submission, plus document costs.

Time away: Finnish nationality law applies in Åland: 8 years of lawful residence, or 5 with the required language skill; at most 365 days abroad can be included, no more than 90 in the final year.
Two passports: Yes. You keep your U.S. citizenship.

The Finnish employed-person permit applies in Åland and follows the job term, up to 4 years; time on a continuous A permit counts toward Finland’s permanent-residence and citizenship rules.
