Time: The Immigration Department does not publish a processing period on the work-permit page.
Cost: BDS$300 application fee; final permit fee depends on the work category and duration.
The hard part: Securing an employer sponsor who submits the application before work starts.

If your first permit is issued in 2027 and you keep living there, this is the road.

Time away: The full 12 months immediately before applying must be spent in Barbados, plus at least five years in total during the seven years before that. The Minister may accept the final continuous year ending up to six months before filing in a special case.
Two passports: Yes. You keep your U.S. citizenship.

Lawful physical residence can count toward naturalisation, but this short-term employer permit ends after at most 11 months and supplies no separate permanent status.
How long the decision takes isn’t published; we allow a year.

The law behind these dates

Time you must spend there: The program sets no minimum number of days. Renewal still expects it to be your home.
Tax: Where you become tax resident follows the days you spend there and where your home is. We map it for your family before you move.
