2

What it takes.

Income
At least $2,840 a month, steady and documented.
Time
2–3 months, including the initial Type D visa and the residence card.
Cost
About $300–700 in visa, permit and translation fees.
The hard part
The permit strictly bars any work for Bulgarian clients or employers, so mixing local and foreign income can void it.

Dollar figures are converted from the local currency at the rate the program’s research used; the official figure is in the local currency.

Language
Bulgarian, shown by a document from the Ministry of Education and Science.
Time away
Permanent residence in Bulgaria for at least 5 years before applying.
Two passports
It depends on the rules at the time and on your home country.
  • The years count, but this permit ends after 2 years, before permanent residence at 5; the family would need to move to another permit to keep going.
  • The remote-work permit stops after 2 years, short of the 5 for permanent residence; the time helps only if the family moves on to another long-term permit.

Time you must spend there

Tax
Bulgarian tax residence follows the 183-day rule; Bulgaria’s flat 10% personal income tax applies once resident.

We never file a tax return. We tell you what applies and brief the professional who does.
