Qualified Retired Persons (QRP) Incentive Program

A renewable annual QRP card, duty-free import of personal effects, a vehicle, boat, or aircraft; a ban on local work with a limited exception; no voting rights.

Who qualifies

Whether you keep your U.S. citizenship depends on the option you choose later.

1

Does it fit your family?

3 questions, from the program’s own rules.

How old are you?

Not legal advice.

2

What it takes.

Income
At least $2,000 a month, steady and documented.
Age
40 or older.
Time
BTB security and immigration review, followed by payment of the final program fees; the QRP card then renews annually.
Cost
$150 application fee, then $1,000 for the main applicant, $750 per dependant, and $200 per QRP card; annual card renewal is $25.
The hard part
Must physically spend 30 consecutive days a year in Belize and renew the card annually forever; QRP by itself is a dead end for citizenship unless the holder separately pursues the permanent-residence track.

Dollar figures are converted from the local currency at the rate the program’s research used; the official figure is in the local currency.

This visa doesn’t lead to a passport.

  1. 2027
    First residence permit

1 year, renewable for 1 year at a time.

Time away
Five years as a permanent resident, with no stay abroad longer than 30 days in a row or three months in total in any 12 months (work in Belize or medical reasons can excuse longer trips).
Two passports
Yes. You keep your U.S. citizenship.
  • Time on this program does not count toward permanent residence or citizenship; the family would need to switch to one that does.
  • The QRP holder is legally a non-resident, and the program’s own conditions say its years do not count toward permanent residence. It needs only 30 consecutive days a year in Belize.
