A one-year work permit for the named employer and a one-year residence card, both renewable. Each family member needs their own residence card.

Who qualifies

A non-Djiboutian who wishes to work after obtaining an employment contract needs authorization from ANEFIP.

Anyone staying beyond three months needs a residence card. It lasts at most one year, never beyond the passport’s validity, and must be renewed before it expires. Djiboutians have hiring priority over foreign workers.

The employee files for the work permit at ANEFIP at least 20 days before the entry visa ends. The permit costs 200,000 Djibouti francs a year. Unskilled jobs go to Djiboutians first.

What it takes.

Time: The work-permit file goes to ANEFIP at least 20 days before the entry visa runs out, so the permit is decided inside the visa’s validity. The residence card follows at the immigration police.
Cost: The work permit is 200,000 Djibouti francs a year (about $1,125). The residence card and consular work visa carry their own fees.
The hard part: The national-preference rule: the employer shows no Djiboutian could fill the job, and both the permit and the card come up for renewal every year.

Time away: Habitual residence in Djibouti for at least the ten years immediately before the application. A commission gives its opinion and naturalisation remains a discretionary decree.
