What it takes.

Time: Processing starts after the authority accepts a complete application; travel and work begin only after the required permission issues.
Cost: The authority assesses its filing charge under the fee schedule in force on submission, plus document costs.
The hard part: Securing the Faroese contract and waiting for the job-specific permit before starting work.

Language: The Danish naturalisation language requirement, with the special evidence and exemption rules for applicants resident in Greenland or the Faroe Islands.
Civics: The 2021 Danish citizenship test, unless the Parliamentary naturalisation committee grants an exemption.
Time away: Danish nationality law applies throughout the Kingdom. The ordinary rule is 9 years’ continuous residence and an indefinite permit held for at least 2 years; applicants in Greenland and the Faroe Islands use the territory-specific paper process and do not attend Denmark’s constitutional ceremony.
Two passports: Yes. You keep your U.S. citizenship.

A work permit is normally issued for up to 1 year at a time; 7 years on essentially the same basis can lead to permanent residence and lawful Faroese residence feeds the Danish naturalisation option.
How long the decision takes isn’t published; we allow a year.
