Global Talent visa

Permission to live and work in the UK for up to 5 years, with no sponsor and freedom to change jobs or be self-employed.

Who qualifies

Either an eligible prestigious prize, or an endorsement from a Home Office-approved endorsing body (e.g. the Royal Society, British Academy, Tech Nation successor bodies) confirming the applicant is a leader ('Exceptional Talent') or emerging leader ('Exceptional Promise') in their field.

What it takes.

Time: Endorsement (Stage 1) runs 1–8 weeks depending on the body; the visa (Stage 2) must be filed within 3 months of endorsement and is usually decided within 3 weeks.
Cost: About $2,000–3,000: no endorsement fee for most bodies, a Stage 2 visa fee, and £1,035 per year of Immigration Health Surcharge.
The hard part: Clearing the endorsement bar: this is a track record visa, not an aspiration visa, and most endorsing bodies expect a substantial public or professional record already.

Indefinite Leave to Remain: pass the Life in the UK test (ages 18–64), prove English at B1 or above, and spend no more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12 months.

Apply for citizenship
With a language test and a civics test.

Citizenship
The decision usually takes 6 months.

Language: English at B1 or above (an approved test or a degree taught in English); usually already shown for settlement.
Civics: The Life in the UK test: 24 questions in 45 minutes on British traditions, history and customs, £50. Passed once, it counts for both settlement and citizenship.
Time away: At least 5 years living in the UK, with no more than 450 days outside it in those 5 years and no more than 90 days in the last 12 months. You must also have held settlement for 12 months.
Two passports: Yes. You keep your U.S. citizenship.

Settlement after 3 years for science, engineering, humanities and medicine endorsees and for recognised leaders, but 5 years for ‘emerging leaders’ in digital technology or arts and culture; citizenship still needs 5 years in the UK.
