Visa-free stay, exempt from the 2026 work-permit law. Citizens of the U.S., EU, UK, Canada and 90-plus other countries can stay in Georgia visa-free for 365 days a calendar year; a March 2026 law required a work permit for almost all foreign work, but an April 2026 amendment carved genuine remote workers back out, so no permit is needed if your employer or clients are outside Georgia.

2

What it takes.

Time
Immediate: entry itself is the only step, no permit to apply for.
Cost
$0. Travel/health insurance is not a legal requirement for the visa-free stay itself, though most nomads carry it.
The hard part
Staying inside the exemption: taking any paid work for a Georgian employer or client without the SESA right-to-work permit is now enforced, where before March 2026 it was an unregulated grey area.

This visa doesn’t lead to a passport.

  1. 2027
    First residence permit

1 year, renewable for 1 year at a time.

Language
Georgian, at the level set by the state’s naturalisation exam.
Civics
Exams on Georgian history and the basic principles of Georgian law.
Time away
Ten years in a row of lawful residence. A year counts as continuous only if you spent no more than 90 days outside Georgia in it (up to 2 years abroad for study or medical treatment are allowed). You also need a job, property or business in Georgia.
Two passports
Usually not: new citizens are asked to give up their other citizenship.
  • Time on this program does not count toward permanent residence or citizenship; the family would need to switch to one that does.
  • A visa-free year is not a residence permit, so it does not start the 10-year clock to permanent residence. A family that wants Georgian status needs a work, investment or other residence permit.

Living there.

Time you must spend there
Resets on a calendar-year basis for the visa-free allowance.
Tax
Tax residence follows 183 days present in a 12-month period; Georgia taxes only Georgian-source income for most individuals, a genuinely favourable regime for foreign-sourced remote income.

We never file a tax return. We tell you what applies and brief the professional who does.
