Indefinite right to reside in Ghana, enter without a visa, and work or be employed without a separate work permit.

Who qualifies

Open to a person of African descent whose immediate forebears have lived outside Africa for at least 3 generations, provable by documents or ethnic origin, or to a former Ghanaian citizen who lost citizenship by naturalising elsewhere.

Applicants must submit an application to the Minister for the Interior with a valid passport, birth certificate, proof of African ancestry, police clearance from both their country of residence and Ghana, and two character references from Ghanaian citizens.

What it takes.

Time: Previously several months to over a year for a decision; as of September 2026 the program is suspended for new diaspora applicants pending redesign.
Cost: About $200–500 in application fees, document authentication and police clearances.
The hard part: Documenting three generations of ancestry outside Africa to the Ministry’s satisfaction, and, currently, waiting for the suspended program to reopen.

Language: Must speak and understand an indigenous Ghanaian language (for example Twi, Ewe or Ga); this cannot be waived.
Time away: The whole 12 months right before applying plus 5 years in total during the 7 years before that, holding a valid residence permit on the day of applying. The applicant must also show they have settled into Ghanaian life.
Two passports: Yes. You keep your U.S. citizenship.

For a person of African descent, the grant gives an indefinite right to live and work from day one. Citizenship remains a separate application under the Citizenship Act’s residence and integration conditions.
How long the decision takes isn’t published; we allow a year.

Time you must spend there: The program sets no minimum number of days. Renewal still expects it to be your home.
Tax: Right of Abode alone does not make you a Ghanaian tax resident; actually living there 183+ days a year does, on a worldwide basis with treaty relief where applicable.
