Higher-education residence permit

Study residence for up to one year at a time, renewable; up to 15 hours of work weekly September-May and full-time work June-August. This does not grant Schengen residence.

Who qualifies

Admission must be to a full-time approved higher-education program at an accredited Greenland institution; prove support funds and adequate ability in the language of instruction.

Time: SIRI lists normal processing of three months, up to four months if more information is needed.
Cost: SIRI lists no processing fee for this permit; mission and document costs may still apply.
The hard part: Getting program approval, school completion of ST1 and funds evidence before filing.

Citizenship

Language: The Danish naturalisation language requirement, with the special evidence and exemption rules for applicants resident in Greenland or the Faroe Islands.
Civics: The 2021 Danish citizenship test, unless the Parliamentary naturalisation committee grants an exemption.
Time away: Danish nationality law applies throughout the Kingdom. The ordinary rule is 9 years’ continuous residence and an indefinite permit held for at least 2 years; applicants in Greenland and the Faroe Islands use the territory-specific paper process and do not attend Denmark’s constitutional ceremony.
Two passports: Usually not: new citizens are asked to give up their other citizenship.

The study permit is issued for up to 1 year at a time and is renewable; Greenland officially allows permanent residence after 7 years on essentially the same work or study basis, followed by Danish naturalisation under the Greenland process.
How long the decision takes isn’t published; we allow a year.
