Employer-specific work permit and visa

Work in the specific Jersey role for the issued period, after any required visa and immigration permission.

Who qualifies

  • A Jersey employer must apply for the permit for a specific role and period; non-British and non-Irish workers need this local permit.
Government of Jersey: Work in Jersey
  • Once the employer has the permit, apply for a visa before arrival. A US citizen with a permit of six months or less uses the published non-visa-national exception.

1

Does it fit your family?

One question, from the program’s own rules.

Do you have a binding job offer in that country?

Not legal advice.

2

What it takes.

Time
Processing starts after the authority accepts a complete application; travel and work begin only after the required permission issues.
Cost
The authority assesses its filing charge under the fee schedule in force on submission, plus document costs.
The hard part
Getting employer sponsorship before the visa step and checking the six-month visa exception carefully.

Citizens by 2034.

If your first permit is issued in 2027 and you keep living there, this is the road.

3 years, renewable for 3 years at a time.

  2. 2030
    Renew the permit

Filed before the old one lapses; renews for 3 years.

  3. 2032
    Permanent residence

Indefinite leave to remain after 5 years on a qualifying long-term option, with English at B1 and the Life in the UK and Islands test.

  4. 2033
    Apply for citizenship

With a language test and a civics test.

  5. 2034
    Citizenship

The decision usually takes 12 months.

Language
English speaking and listening at B1.
Civics
The Life in the UK and Islands test.
Time away
British nationality law applies in the Islands: normally 5 years in the UK, Jersey, Guernsey or Isle of Man, settlement for the final 12 months, no more than 450 days away in those 5 years and 90 in the final year.
Two passports
Yes. You keep your U.S. citizenship.
  • The long-term option is issued for up to 3 years and can be renewed; unlike Jersey’s temporary options, it builds the 5-year qualifying period for indefinite leave and later British citizenship.

Living there.

Time you must spend there
The program sets no minimum number of days. Renewal still expects it to be your home.
Tax
Where you become tax resident follows the days you spend there and where your home is. We map it for your family before you move.

We never file a tax return. We tell you what applies and brief the professional who does.
