Student stay endorsement

Extended stay for study after PICA endorsement; employment permission is not established.

Enrol at an institution registered with the Ministry of Education and bring its registration letter addressed to PICA, a passport valid at least six months, a one-year return ticket and any required entry visa.

Student stay endorsement needs admission to a qualifying course; the course and your passport then decide it.

Time: PICA publishes three working days for extension processing.
Cost: The authority assesses its filing charge under the fee schedule in force on submission, plus document costs.
The hard part: Getting registered-course documentation and visiting PICA promptly after arrival.

A foreign national employed in Jamaica for more than three years may apply. PICA interviews the applicant and asks for means of support, police and medical records, references and evidence of property or assets.

Time away: Residence must include the 12 months immediately before applying and at least four additional years in aggregate during the seven years before that.
Two passports: Yes. You keep your U.S. citizenship.

The endorsement follows the registered course and lawful residence can count toward citizenship, but the employment-based three-year permanent-residence option does not apply to study alone.
How long the decision takes isn’t published; we allow a year.

The law behind these dates

Time you must spend there: The program sets no minimum number of days. Renewal still expects it to be your home.
Tax: Where you become tax resident follows the days you spend there and where your home is. We map it for your family before you move.
