National (D) visa for remote work, "other cases"

A national (D) visa valid up to 1 year; does not extend in-country as a rule.

Who qualifies

You keep your U.S. citizenship.

1

Does it fit your family?

2 questions, from the program’s own rules.

Steady monthly income, from any source?

Not legal advice.

2

What it takes.

Income
At least $1,268 a month, steady and documented.
Time
Up to 15 working days once filed, in practice often longer at busy consulates.
Cost
About $150 (€140 visa fee) plus insurance.
The hard part
The option rests on the consulate’s discretion under "other cases" rather than a dedicated remote-work statute, so documentation expectations can vary by post.

Dollar figures are converted from the local currency at the rate the program’s research used; the official figure is in the local currency.

This visa doesn’t lead to a passport.

  1. 2027
    First residence permit

    1 year, not renewable.

Language
Lithuanian at the state’s first category (about A2), by a test and an interview.
Civics
A written test on the basics of the Lithuanian Constitution.
Time away
Ten years of continuous, lawful residence in Lithuania, holding permanent residence both when you apply and when the decision is made.
Two passports
Usually not: new citizens are asked to give up their other citizenship.
  • Time on this program does not count toward permanent residence or citizenship; the family would need to switch to one that does.
  • A national visa, not a residence permit; Lithuanian permanent residence counts only years on temporary residence permits.
The law behind these dates
4

Living there.

Time you must spend there
A national visa, not a residence permit, so there is no minimum-days rule in Lithuania; it does not count toward any later residence status.
Tax
A visa stay under 183 days a year generally avoids Lithuanian tax residence.

We never file a tax return. We tell you what applies and brief the professional who does.
