Citizens by 2033.

If your first permit is issued in 2027 and you keep living there, this is the road.

    First residence permit

    2 years, renewable for 2 years at a time.

  2. 2029
    Renew the permit

    Filed before the old one lapses; renews for 2 years.

  3. 2031
    Renew the permit

    Filed before the old one lapses; renews for 2 years.

  4. 2032
    Permanent residence

    Long-term resident status after 5 years of lawful, unbroken stay (no absence over 6 months in a row or 10 months in total), stable resources, and evidence of integration such as language-course certificates.

  5. 2032
    Apply for citizenship

    With a language test and a civics test.

  6. 2033
    Citizenship

    The decision usually takes 8 months.

Language
Luxembourgish: the Sproochentest, A2 in speaking and B1 in listening, €75.
Civics
The ‘Vivre ensemble au Grand-Duché de Luxembourg’ course (rights, institutions, history) or its test.

5 years of legal residence, with the final year before applying unbroken.
