A temporary residence permit for up to 1 year at a time, renewable without a stated cap while the business continues.

Who qualifies

Register a North Macedonian company (a single founder/director is enough) with the minimum €5,000 charter capital deposited in a local bank account, and be a shareholder or managing director of it.

What it takes.

Savings: About $5,450.
Time: 4–8 weeks once the company is set up (company registration itself typically takes 3–5 business days).
Cost: About $500–1,500 for company registration and the permit, on top of the €5,000 charter capital, which stays as the company’s working capital rather than a fee.
The hard part: There is no dedicated remote-worker status, so a genuinely foreign-facing freelancer must incorporate locally to get any residence right at all, and stays over 180 days a year require the residence permit regardless of nationality.

Permanent residence
Five years in a row on temporary residence, with no more than 6 months in a row or 10 months in total abroad. You also need steady income, housing and health insurance, and no prison sentence of a year or more. Years on a study permit count half. Years on a permit based only on owning a home do not count.

Language: Macedonian well enough to talk easily with the people around you, judged by a commission the government sets up.
Time away: Seven years of lawful, continuous residence before applying. The citizenship law does not count days abroad; the permanent-residence rule (at most 6 months in a row or 10 in total over 5 years) is the working guide.
Two passports: It depends on the rules at the time and on your home country.

Business residence counts in full. Renewals are at most 1 year each, so the permit must be renewed without a gap every year.
