North Macedonia

Citizenship by investment (fund or business option). North Macedonia has had a €200,000 fund option and a €400,000 business option on the books since 2021, but it has issued only a handful of passports a year and, as of September 2026, is effectively dormant while the government drafts amendments under EU pressure to scrap it; do not treat it as open.

Citizenship by investment (fund or business option)

If issued at all: full North Macedonian citizenship and a passport with visa-free Schengen travel, access the EU has said it will review if the program survives.

Who qualifies

Whether you keep your U.S. citizenship depends on the option you choose later.

1

Does it fit your family?

One question, from the program’s own rules.

Savings you could move or invest?

Not legal advice.

2

What it takes.

Investment
About $220,000.
Time
No reliable timeline; approvals have been rare since 2021 and may be frozen while the 2026 reform is pending.
Cost
About €200,000 ($220,000) for the fund option or about €400,000 ($440,000) plus payroll for the business option, plus legal fees.
The hard part
It barely exists in practice: almost no passports issued, the EU pushing to kill it, and a June 2026 bill that would remove the fixed price altogether. The thresholds may not exist by the time an application is decided.

Dollar figures are converted from the local currency at the rate the program’s research used; the official figure is in the local currency.

Citizens by 2029.

    Citizenship and passport

    Usually 8–24 months from filing.

Language
Macedonian well enough to talk easily with the people around you, judged by a commission the government sets up.
Two passports
It depends on the rules at the time and on your home country.
  • This is a discretionary ‘special economic interest’ grant with no residence needed. Investors keep their old citizenship, but the program is close to frozen while a 2026 bill to scrap the fixed prices is pending.

Living there.

Time you must spend there
None beyond the investment itself.
Tax
North Macedonia taxes personal income at a flat 10%, but citizenship alone changes nothing about your home-country tax residence.
