Who qualifies

  • Arrive on a valid Entry Pass (Work Permit) issued by the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology; this is separate from the later eVisa.

  • The employer or authorized representative must obtain the Work eVisa through Xpat within 15 days of arrival; its validity follows the work permit and renewal is limited to one year.

Time
The issuing authority decides the application after the complete sponsored file and prerequisite approvals are lodged.
Cost
Government charges are assessed under the issuing authority’s schedule; sponsor, translation and document costs are separate.

Time away
Twelve continuous years; absences totaling no more than six months are allowed if actual residence exceeds ten years. The applicant must be Muslim and provide distinguished service to Maldives.
Two passports
Usually not: new citizens are asked to give up their other citizenship.
  • Actual lawful residence can build the twelve-year citizenship period, but naturalisation also requires Islam, Dhivehi, constitutional knowledge, distinguished service and renunciation.
  • How long the decision takes isn’t published; we allow a year.
  • This country asks new citizens to give up their other citizenship.
