Digital nomad long-stay visa

A 90-day visa on entry, extendable to 12 months in-country, and renewable for a further 12 months if conditions still hold.

Who qualifies

Be employed by a company registered outside Romania, or own and manage a foreign-registered company, doing all work remotely.

What it takes.

Income: At least $6,250 a month, steady and documented.
Time: 2–4 weeks for the initial visa; a further few weeks for the in-country extension.
Cost: About $150–300 in visa and extension fees.
The hard part: Renewing past the first year depends on continuing to clear the income bar with fresh documentation each time, and the floor has risen sharply as Romanian wages have climbed.

Language: Romanian, with basic knowledge of Romanian culture and civilisation, checked at an interview with the National Citizenship Authority.

Time away: Eight years living legally in Romania, holding long-term (or permanent) residence on the day you file.
Two passports: Yes. You keep your U.S. citizenship.

The digital-nomad residence permit is lawful temporary residence and is not among the periods excluded from Romania’s five-year long-term-residence calculation.

Time you must spend there: No separate day-count while the visa is being extended in-country, but exceeding the 183-day Schengen/Romania presence limits ends the tax-exempt treatment and can complicate renewal.
Tax: Foreign salary or company income is exempt from Romanian income tax and social contributions while on this visa, provided the 183-day Schengen/Romania presence limits are respected.
