Language: Swedish shown by an accepted school record or Swedish for Immigrants course D.
Civics: The citizenship test on Swedish society, available since August 2026.
Time away: Eight continuous years of habitual residence. The qualifying time normally starts with the settlement-based permit; time abroad and permits that did not lead to settlement can be deducted.
Two passports: Yes. You keep your U.S. citizenship.

Lawful residence on this status builds the ordinary residence clock while the permit remains valid.
How long the decision takes isn’t published; we allow a year.
