Reaches a great-grandparent.
Each answer assumes none of your ancestors became a citizen of another country before their child was born. Below is what changes each answer.
Citizen by descent
A child of a Turkish citizen is Turkish by descent and is registered at the consulate.
Citizen by descent
A child born abroad to a Turkish citizen is Turkish from birth, so your parent is Turkish through your grandparent and, once registered, you are Turkish through your parent.
What would settle itWhether your parent is registered in the Turkish civil register; if not, they register first.
If your Turkish ancestor gave up or lost Turkish citizenship before your parent was born, citizenship did not pass on; the Blue Card (a residence and work status for former citizens and their children) may remain.

No date named in Turkey’s rule decides who qualifies. The answers above turn on the family’s facts, not on when anyone was born or left.
Turkey’s rule gives the same answer whether the line runs through a mother or a father. Where its reasons speak of mothers or fathers, they say:
You keep your citizenship.
On every open route, the rule lets a citizen of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Argentina or South Africa keep that citizenship.
Open to you through a parent, a grandparent or a great-grandparent
Closed: no one qualifies this way today

Through a parent
Through a grandparent or great-grandparent
Most countries also want proof that your ancestor didn’t become a citizen somewhere else before their child was born: the naturalization record with its date, or a letter saying there isn’t one.

Directorate General of Population and Citizenship Affairs (Nüfus ve Vatandaşlık İşleri, NVİ): the Turkish parent’s population-register record (nüfus kayıt örneği)
The parent pulls it on e-Devlet (turkiye.gov.tr) or at any nüfus office or Turkish consulate; the consulate also checks the register itself at the appointment.
NVİ population register (the parent’s birth entry), plus the U.S. state vital records office for the applicant’s own birth
NVİ population register: the parents’ marriage must already be registered in Turkey; a marriage before U.S. authorities is registered at the consulate first
The Washington embassy accepts English documents without translation for birth registration; the multiple-citizenship notice is translated by the consulate for $11.46. For adult applications, non-multilingual foreign documents need Turkish translations by a sworn translator registered with the consulate or a Turkish notary.
If your family’s records name one of these, Turkey’s law may be the one that applies. The town decides.
We know of no pending bill or recent court ruling for Turkey.
We re-read the official pages behind this guide every day. When one changes, a person checks the rule before we update anything here.
2 residence programs lead to Turkey without an ancestor, each with its own law and road to citizenship.
Turkey’s general short-term residence permit, renewable yearly, is the option most foreign remote workers and retirees actually use, since Turkey has no digital-nomad visa as such.
Buy Turkish real estate worth at least $400,000, hold it 3 years, and the whole family gets Turkish citizenship directly, without ever living there.

Not legal advice. Every answer comes from the country’s own laws and is tested against real cases. Where the law isn’t clear, we say “possible” rather than guess.
Tell us about one parent or grandparent. We’ll answer in about a minute, and show you the law behind it.
