Time: 6–12 months from filing to the presidential decree that grants citizenship.
Cost: About $200–500: certified copies, translations, and passport fees. The application itself is free.
The hard part: Producing a civil or church record that actually shows Armenian nationality or ethnicity for an ancestor; family memory alone is not enough.
Who decides: The Police of the Republic of Armenia (passport and visa department), through the Armenian embassy for your address.
The first record: A civil, Soviet-era or church record showing an ancestor’s Armenian nationality, from The National Archives of Armenia (a subdivision of the Ministry of Justice), or an Armenian Apostolic church that kept baptismal registers. Write with the name, birthplace and approximate date; Soviet-era internal passports and birth certificates often listed nationality directly. If no civil record survives, ask the church that served the family’s town for a baptismal certificate. moj.am

The Migration and Citizenship Service decides within 90 working days of registering the file; a presidential decree grants citizenship.
Applicants of Armenian origin are exempt from the three-year residence and Armenian-language requirements (Law on Citizenship, Art. 13(2)(3)); the law still asks for familiarity with the Constitution. A draft law in public comment in September 2026 would add two years’ residence (366 days present) from 1 January 2028; file before then.
The embassy’s list includes residence documents; they apply only to applicants filing on residence grounds, who file with the Migration and Citizenship Service in Yerevan. An applicant of Armenian origin living abroad files none.
Men granted citizenship are liable for military service until 37 if they have not served; they file a conscription application with the first passport. Plan before a male applicant travels to Armenia.
From other countries: the same electronic system applies worldwide; the originals go to the local Armenian embassy or consulate (e.g. the Consulate General in Los Angeles for western U.S. residents, above).
The Consulate General in Los Angeles (346 N Central Ave, Glendale) serves Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. It is Armenia’s only career consulate in the U.S.; residents of every other state go to the embassy in Washington.

A draft law would add a residence requirement from 20288 September 2026
The Ministry of Internal Affairs put two draft laws out for public comment from 8 to 23 September 2026. A person of Armenian ethnicity would need two calendar years’ legal residence in Armenia, with at least 366 days present, before taking citizenship. If adopted, the change applies from 1 January 2028. The drafts were not yet before the National Assembly in September 2026. Today’s law has no residence requirement for Armenians by origin.

From 1 November 2026, Armenia replaces its old 10-year "special residency" with a new investor fast track granting permanent residence immediately; the qualifying investment sizes are set around AMD 1–2 million, but the government decision spelling out exactly what counts as a qualifying investment had still not been published as of late September 2026.
