Child of a Portuguese citizen
A child of a Portuguese parent is Portuguese by origin and only needs to declare it and register the birth.
Grandchild with effective ties
Grandchildren of a Portuguese citizen can be Portuguese by origin if they show effective ties, which since May 2026 means passing a test in the Portuguese language and culture, and the grandparent’s nationality must never have been lost.

Great-grandchild naturalisation (2026 law)
Great-grandchildren have no option by origin. Since May 2026 they may be naturalised, at the Government’s discretion, after five years of legal residence in Portugal; a parent or grandparent who becomes Portuguese first opens the simpler option.

What counts as having applied by 19 May 2026: A nationality application already pending when Organic Law 1/2026 entered into force on 19 May 2026 (art. 7(2)).
Portugal’s rule gives the same answer whether the line runs through a mother or a father. Where its reasons speak of mothers or fathers, they say:

The Portuguese civil registry (IRN): the Conservatória do Registo Civil of the place of birth. Any conservatória can issue a certidão from the national system; Civil Online issues an online certidão (an access code) that Portuguese authorities accept in place of paper.
Civil Online needs only the full name, date of birth and place of birth (the registration number and year if known); the registry finds the conservatória itself. Books older than 100 years are transferred to the district archive, so a birth before about 1926 may already be at the Arquivo Distrital.
The Arquivo Distrital of the district (DGLAB), which holds the parish registers (baptisms, marriages, deaths) up to 1911, when civil registration became mandatory; books pass to the district archive 100 years after their last entry.
Find the freguesia’s register in DigitArq (the district archives’ online catalogue with scanned books), note the reference code, and order the certified copy through CRAV or by email to that district archive.
The Conservatória do Registo Civil where the marriage was entered; a Portuguese citizen’s marriage abroad is registered (transcribed) through the consulate or the Conservatória dos Registos Centrais.
Needed for a Portuguese ancestor’s marriage in Portugal, or to show the chain; use Civil Online with the registration details.
The IRN nationality forms state that documents in English, French or Spanish need no translation unless presentation of one is required (the IRN waiver applies when the official reads that language). U.S., British, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and Argentine records usually go untranslated; Brazilian records are already in Portuguese. When a translation is asked for, it must be certified under Portuguese law (a Portuguese notary, lawyer, solicitor or certified translator, or a Portuguese consulate). Consulates do it too: Toronto translates at CAD 48.30 a page, and New York certifies a translation’s accuracy for $29.21.
